Cuckooland Tented Lodge, located in Ruhija section, Bwindi Forest National Park is believed to be one of the mid range gorilla safari lodge where visitors can stay for both gorilla trekking and for bird watching around this amazing home for mountain gorillas in Uganda. Cuckooland Tented Lodge is surrounded with more than 270 species that have been seen in and immediately around the lodge. (A full bird list is attached) including 8 Albertine Rift Endemics (A.R.Es) and many other uncommon species with limited range. Of these, around 50 are resident in the 10 acres of the lodge’s grounds and are virtually guaranteed to be sighted by any keen bird-watcher during a stay of 24 hours or more. These include: 6 species of sun-bird, 6 greenbul species, 4 species of flycatcher, Grey-throated barbet, Narrow-tailed starling, Black-billed weaver, Grey-headed negrofinch, Luhder’s bush-shrike, Grey-capped warbler, Bocage’s bush-shrike. Here is a full lit of resident bird species that visitors are very likely to see include:-  Black-billed turaco, White-breasted negrofinch, Great Blue turaco, Mountain-masked apalis, Black-throated apalis, Pink-footed puffback, Honeyguide greenbul, Mountain greenbul, Tullberg’s Woodpecker, Elliot’s woodpecker, Black Cuckoo-shrike, Petit’s Cuckoo-shrike, Red-faced woodland warbler and the Yellow-eyed black
flycatcher.

Take a path right along the forest edge, where you will be likely to meet and see forest species such as: Equatorial akalat,  White-throated greenbul, African broadbill, White-bellied robin-chat,  Ruwenzori batis, Blue-headed sunbird, Red-headed malimbe, Dusky crimsoning & many others

Many of these species can be seen from the verandah of the tent-houses, which are situated around 20 meters away from the edge of the forest and overlook the forest and from the restaurant, which has stunning  panoramic views over the forest below an you have no need to pay any park fees too.

Staying at Cuckooland Tented Lodge in Bwindi, gives you a good chance of seeing chimps and 5 other primate species, more than 70 labeled, mainly indigenous tree species, sculpture gardens, gym and natural swimming pond, and you can see why Cuckooland is the No 1 bird-watching lodge in Uganda.

Guests/ visitors do have to walk down 10 minutes from the car park to the lodge to reach such an idyllic situation (you are not going to find all the above at the side of the road) and, more significantly, have to walk up again what is in parts a fairly steep, but stepped path, but the rewards are worth it.  However Cuckooland is NOT SUITABLE FOR THE DISABLED, THE ELDERLY AND THOSE WHO ARE NOT ABLE TO MANAGE A LITTLE HILL-WALKING.

The Lodge is a private excellent place for Gorilla trekking and bird-watching encounters in the area.

Please note: we have 4 double tent-houses, so maximum sleeping capacity for guests is 8.
Visitors seeking to traverse further on safari in to Rwanda from this point, it so accessible and ideal especially reaching out to Volcanoes National Park which is famous for gorilla tracking in Rwanda and golden monkey experiences.
