Visiting Kidepo Valley National Park.

One of Uganda’s most stunningly beautiful reserves, the remote Kidepo Valley National Park stretches across the Karamoja region of northeast Uganda. Broad swathes of savannah are studded with hills and rock clusters, traversed by the forest-flanked Lorupei River. The park is home to roughly 80 mammal species, 28 of which are found at no other park in the country, and is particularly well known for its rich population of raptors, as well as over 450 species of bird. Visitors can look forward to excellent wildlife sightings including greater and lesser kudu, eland, lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and a variety of plains game.

Where to stay for your Luxury Honeymoon Safari in Kidepo

Apoka Safari Lodge.

Set deep in the Kidepo Valley National Park, Apoka Lodge blends seamlessly among the endless hills and rocky outcrops. With only 10 guest rooms, this is intimate and remote at its best. Kidepo is Uganda’s most isolated National Park, located in the northern reaches of the country where the light is golden, the wildlife abundant and the skies are enormous. Elephants roam through the camp, lions perch on the nearby boulders as if posing for their close-up, and massive herds of buffalo are a part of the landscape.

Apoka Safari lodge is built in the traditional manner: canvas-walled rooms with high thatched roofs and big breezy windows open to the views. All rooms feature private outdoor bathtubs – deep tubs surrounded by big boulders – looking out over the landscape. The decor is neutral and natural: a palette of cream, stone and oatmeal allows the impressive scenery to take precedence and a massive rock-hewn pool brings respite to the hot sunny afternoons.
Guides, all from the local area, lead activities including walks, game drives in open vehicles and interpretive visits to the local Karamong villages or the secluded homestead of the fascinating hunter-gatherer Ik people.

Visiting Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Located in southwestern Uganda, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is said to be Africa’s oldest rainforest. It is world-renowned for its excellent gorilla-sighting opportunities – the forest is home to half of the remaining mountain gorillas on earth. This gorilla experience takes place among a rugged landscape of dense jungle, cascading waterfalls, sparkling mountain streams, deep valleys, and steep ridges. The untouched forest has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its breath-taking natural beauty and unique ecological significance, and aside from the amazing gorilla interactions, there are other draw cards such as a network of forest walks, over 340 species of bird to spot, and a variety of brightly-colored butterflies to identify. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the spectacular Virunga Volcanoes, three of which are still active.

Where to stay for your Luxury Honeymoon Safaris in Bwindi Forest.

Bwindi Lodge.

Overlooking the primeval Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and with stunning views of the forest canopy across a serene stream, Bwindi Lodge is one of Africa’s unique lodges. The property has dramatic views of the impenetrable forest and is a great place to spot the monkeys and birds hidden in the foliage. In 2021 two new delxue bandas have opened, standard bandas have been rebuilt and upgraded, and the lounge and library have been reimagined.

The award-winning Bwindi Bar, in the high street of the village nearby, is the most stylish and colorful bar in the area! Guests also enjoy informal tapas-style meals inspired by Ugandan dishes. It’s the Harry’s Bar of Bwindi! Guests can make their ‘rolex’ wrap and the delicious Gorillini Cocktail, a must-have after a gorilla tracking in Bwindi!

Visiting Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Located in southwestern Uganda, in the Kisoro District, the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park forms part of the much larger Virunga Conservation Area. This wilderness sanctuary was created to protect the rare mountain gorillas that inhabit its dense forests. The striking landscape boasts three conical volcanoes which are a part of the magnificent Virunga Range which fringes Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. Aside from the main attraction which is the mountain gorillas, the park is home to buffaloes, elephants, endangered golden monkeys, and many bird species. The three extinct volcanoes offer plenty of hiking trails.

Where to stay for your Luxury Honeymoon Safaris in Mount Gahinga Gorilla Park

Mount Gahinga Lodge.

This opened in 1997 and was the first lodge of the Volcanoes Safaris collection. It is the perfect base to go gorilla tracking on the Ugandan side of the Virungas, track the rare golden monkey, climb a volcano, walk through local villages, and most of all share the culture of the Batwa, the oldest inhabitants of the Central African rain forest.

The charming property, inspired by traditional design and building techniques, has been re-imagined in 2019: the lounge, dining room, and gardens have been remodeled, and two new deluxe bandas have been launched. The luxury bandas reflect the magic of the aesthetic traditions of the Bufimbira people, with their distinct colors. Each Banda has an ensuite luxury shower room, fireplace, and private porch.
